Samuel Dean Smith, age 64, of Harrison, Michigan and formerly of Lansing, Michigan, passed away on Monday, August 09, 2010 at Prestige Place in Clare, Michigan.
He was born the son of Gordon O. Smith and Cecilia Marie Turcotte on May 17, 1946 in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. On November 23, 1978, he was united in marriage to the former Andrea O'Lear in Clare, Michigan. Mr. Smith had worked as a truck driver in the freighting industry for many years. He was also a tribal member of the Saginaw Indian Chippewa Tribe of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, the American Legion Post #404 of Harrison, V.F.W. Post 1075 of Harrison, Harrison Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #2235, John J. Carton Masonic Lodge #436 of Harrison, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #3541 of Harrison, and the Houghton Lake Elks Lodge #1982. In his spare time, he enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting, participating in powwows, and going to the Soaring Eagle Casino. He had lived in the Harrison area since 1983 where he had moved from Lansing, Michigan.
He is survived by his wife, Andrea Smith of Harrison; daughters, Jody (Paul) LaPorte of Harrison and Leslee (Jeffrey) Gardner also of Harrison; brothers: Joseph (Kim) Smith of Lansing, Michigan, Abraham Smith of Flint, Michigan, David Smith also of Flint, Michigan, and James (Kelly) Smith of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan; sisters, Faith (Paul) Davis of Springhill, Tennessee and Delores Drews of Mt. Pleasant; three grandchildren: Jessica, Cody and Christopher; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his three brothers: Harold, Timmy Gene, and Daniel Smith and sister, Ruth Ann Cumins.
Memorial services will be held on Thursday, August 12, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Stocking Funeral Home in Harrison, Michigan. Friends may meet with the family from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be considered to the American Cancer Society.
