Tribal health officials are hoping an upcoming event will foster a
healthy beginning as the next century approaches.
"Journey
into a Healthy Millennium" is the theme for the 14th Annual Health
Fair on Oct. 26 at the Tribal Operations Gymnasium from 10 a.m. to
3 p.m.
The
activity is conducted by Nimkee Memorial Wellness Center personnel.
"The theme is a way for us to take advantage of the new millennium
and having it start off healthier," said Health Educator Mikki Marcotte.
"We chose to focus on this instead of the usual Halloween theme."
But
health fair planners are still keeping the spirit of Halloween alive
through the costume and booth decorating contests. "The contests makes
it fun for people to come and participate," Marcotte said.
Booth
space will be available to highlight their services, on and off the
Reservation, to better equip community members on topics relating
to healthy living. Registration for booth space must be made by Oct.
18 through the clinic.
Last
year, about 350 people attended the event. Besides the informative
booths, free services are also offered at the health fair. These include
cholesterol and blood sugar screenings, blood pressure checks and
flu shots. Food will be provided and door prizes will be awarded throughout
the day.
