Minutes before Devin Tomkins has to step into the ring in the first bout of the Rez Rumble card on March 12, the 58-pound amateur boxer talks about lifetime ambitions.
When asked about future goals, the 2-2 fighter from Bay City mentions the Junior Olympics, Olympics and one other thing he might like to become later in life.
"President of the United States," the nine-year-old states with confidence. "Or just get into politics. I think I'd like that."
The third grader also says math is his favorite subject at Washington School. He has been fighting for about a year now, and admires such champion profession boxers as Roy Jones Jr., Evander Holyfield and Felix Trinidad. He also kicks into an old-school gear by mentioning Rocky Marciano in the same breath.
"I started boxing because my uncle used to box before he died," explains Devin. "I think it's a cool sport."
Prior to his three-round bout with James Hovey (Wolverine), Devin warmed up by throwing punches and doing one-arm push-ups near the ringside area. After three minutes of action, Devin's fate went to the scorecards where he earned a decision.
"I need to work on my stamina," he said after the fight. "I had a lot of fun in the ring tonight, yet there's more I need to do as a boxer."
Devin, who trains four days a week, said his next fight will likely be in May for the Junior Olympics trials in Grand Rapids.
