Domestic Violence Awareness Month Poster Contest-for all 6th through 8th graders; design and create a poster expressing how domestic violence makes you feel. The winning poster will be displayed throughout the community during the month of October. Turn in completed entries by Sept. 22 to: Behavioral Health Programs, 2800 S. Shepherd Road, Mt. Strengthening the Circle-Social, cultural, legal and health issues for Michigan Indians today on Sept. 23 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Union Gold Room A & B at Michigan State University. A keynote address on the impact of missionary boarding schools on the American Indian population in the United States will be provided by Warren Petoskey (Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians) and Elder Advocate, Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa. Additional topics covered will include: social service issues in Indian communities, cultural preservation through language, legal practice in the Tribal Court System, major health issues of Tribal nations, and mental health issues. Infant Massage (Central Michigan Community Hospital)-This class is intended for the parent(s) and their baby that is between newborn and walking age. Designed for women in their first or early second trimester, this class is loaded with information and tips for a healthy pregnancy. Cost is $25. 20th Annual Health Fair-Oct. 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Tribal Gymnasium at Tribal Operations. This years theme is "Creep back into good health," which is Halloween oriented to encourage vendors to wear costumes.
AA Meetings-Tuesdays at 7 p.m. and Fridays at 1 p.m. Location: 2469 Nish-Na-Be-Anong (next to Housing). Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for AA membership; we are self-supporting through our own contributions. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and to help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety. Veterans Meeting-Oct. 4 The Anishnabe Ogitchedaw Veterans and Warrior Society meets the first Tuesday of each month in the old Seniors' Room at Tribal Operations at 6 p.m. with a potluck immediately following.
