Break the SilenceVigil-Oct. 8 from 6:30 to 9:30 at Behavioral Health, 2800 S. Shepherd Rd. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the Nami Migizi Nangwiihgan Program is hosting a vigil. The evening will start off with a walk from Behavioral Health into the Seventh Generation's Traditional Village. 5th Annual Indigenous Peoples Art Market and Juried Show-Oct. 7-9 at the Ziibiwing Center of Anishnabe Culture & Lifeways in Mt. Pleasant. This three-day show presents leading Native artists and their work to the mid-Michigan area. Judges with special expertise in the field of Native art will select the winning artists in the Juried Art Show. Over $17,000 will be awarded in prize money. 10th Annual Feather Link Tea- This event will unite community women and promote healthy lifestyles in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is planned for Oct. 18 and will take place at the Soaring Eagle Resort from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Guest Speaker Denise Alley will provide a presentation on the "Three Secrets for a Balanced Native Woman."
Adult Basketball League Draft Night-Oct. 19; Sunday games start Nov. 6 with a draft entry fee of $25. The number of teams will be determined by the number of players on draft night. There will be a maximum of nine players to a team. Coaches will select players from draft, first round picks will be determined by drawing numbers, draft order will reverse with each round. Participants must be 16 or older to play, a Tribal member, Tribal descendant, Tribal employee, or a member of the Saginaw Chippewa community. All players will be required to complete a draft card and pay the league fee prior to being drafted. Teams are responsible for their own Jerseys. 20th Annual Health Fair-Oct. 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Tribal Gymnasium at Tribal Operations. This years theme is "Creep back into good health," which is Halloween oriented to encourage vendors to wear costumes.
AA Meetings-Tuesdays at 7 p.m. and Fridays at 1 p.m. Location: 2469 Nish-Na-Be-Anong (next to Housing). Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for AA membership; we are self-supporting through our own contributions. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and to help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety. Bimaadiziwin Kinooma-agewinan parenting program-The class takes place at 5:30 p.m. each Thursday. The program has been running for four years with success and has been presented at several national conferences. For more information, call (989) 775-4910.
