The At-Large Program's annual Chi-asin powwow is viewed as a culturally-balanced event that promotes the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe's historical significance in southern Saginaw County.
"The Place of Our Ancestors" traditional powwow will take place June 16-18 at Showboat Park in Chesaning.
The powwow kicks off June 16 with a four-person golf scramble at Twin Brooks Golf Club in the morning and a family-friendly musical show featuring several local acts in the evening.
Grand Entry is slated for 1 and 6 p.m. on June 17 and at 1 p.m. the following day.
"The powwow is intended to build awareness of who we are and where our people traveled," stated Director Amy F. Alberts.
"Between song and dance, the powwow is a very balanced event. Our activities promote healthy life-styles with an underlying philosophy of prevention."
Music, traditional food and dance are representatives of the full range of life for American Indians. They are the integral fuels that have always fed the fires of honor and traditions. American Indian dance is a form of praise, worship and a way to experience interconnectedness through motion. Powwows are celebrations, but as with the thread that runs through all of life, there are sacred traditions to be found in this coming together of people.
