About $3,000 has been raised for the Oscoda Indian Mission Cemetery Monument Fund.
Organizers are hoping to raise twice that amount before May 1 for the construction of a memorial and fence at the two-acre site, located off of U.S. 41 and adjacent to the Huron National Forest. The area is currently being used as a shortcut for recreational vehicles and a fence is desperately needed around the cemetery.
Besides the Anishnabe Ogitchedaw Veterans and Warrior Society, the fund is also sponsored by the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan.
