Tribal Education visits Delta College
Joseph V. Sowmick - October 22, 2013
In an effort to provide regular bonus coverage throughout the month, Team Observer collaborates with the Delta College Foundation on a recent site visit by Tribal Education representatives to their University Center campus.. The Tribal delegation included Interim Higher Education Coordinator Amanda Flaugher, Migizi CEO Leadership Intern Samantha Olson and Tribal Observer Photojournalist Joseph Sowmick.
“The site visits will open doors for our students who wish to attend Delta. The staff was very welcoming and the campus is beautiful,” Flaugher informs. “I am looking forward to arranging a site visit with our high school students in the spring of 2014. If anyone is interested in more information regarding Delta College please feel free to stop by the Higher Education office.
The site visit was coordinated by the Delta Foundation through Julie Dorcey, Major Gifts Advisor. “It was a pleasure and a privilege to have Tribal Education representatives join us on campus today. Faculty, staff and students are excited about the potential that exists for us to work together for the benefit of many,” Dorcey explains. “We could not be more excited, or honored, to have this opportunity to communicate, create and collaborate. I offer a heartfelt miigwetch to the Tribe from your friends at Delta.”
Olson was impressed with her first visit to the campus and looks forward to returning to other events hosted by Delta College.
“I just wanted to say, Thank you Delta for inviting us for a great opportunity to tour and learn about your facility,” Olson said. “It was overall, a fun time and very informative.”
Delta College will be collaborating with SCIT during their November Native Heritage Month. A Talking Circle student panel on contemporary Native issues with Roxanne Adamczyk and Timothy and Cathy Stone is scheduled for 2 to 3pm on Nov. 14th with Anishinabe Ogichedaw Veterans Mike and David Perez in attendance. There is also a screening of the Sherman Alexis film “Smoke Signals” scheduled for Nov. 20th.
