Red Swamp Lacrosse welcomes Coach Kenney 4-18-15
Joseph V. Sowmick - April 20, 2015
In an effort to provide bonus coverage, Team Observer joins with the Youth LEAD Activities Team and Red Swamp Lacrosse in welcoming Olympic Coach John Kenney to Broadway Field on April 18. Coach Kenney guided the Scotland National Team to a 7th place World finish in the 2010 World Games, Manchester, England and coached the Highlanders in their successful showing at the 2012 Europeans. Coach Kenney is also a member of the Bridgton Academy and the Michigan Lacrosse Coaches Halls of Fame.
Youth LEAD Activities Manager and Red Swamp Lacrosse Coach Ronnie Ekdahl coordinated the visit and was clearly impressed on the wealth of knowledge and experience Coach Kenney shared.
“It is an honor and a privilege to have someone like Coach Kenney to come out and instruct our Tribal youth in the fundamentals of a sport that has so much history with our Tribal people,” Coach Ekdahl exclaimed. “The drills he ran the youth through and the excitement of watching them improve right before our eyes shows our Red Swamp Lacrosse team is moving in the right direction and we will be ready to represent the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe in Inter-Tribal competition.”
Coach Kenney is currently the head coach of the Scotland national team. He's also a former Long Island and Michigan high school lacrosse coach earning Coach of the Year honors eight times. During his tenure he racked up 354 career victories and was also named the 2005 US Lacrosse Man of the Year. John has coached all four of his sons into top Division I lacrosse programs at Princeton, Virginia, Syracuse and Penn State while helping countless others to go on to become All Americans, State Champions, National Champions and College Coaches. He has presented to coaches from all over the country at the National Clinic and is currently the publisher of the Lacrosse Coach Newsletter.
An interview with Coach Kenney will be featured in the upcoming May edition of the Tribal Observer.
