The Tribal Leadership Program is intended to create opportunities for tribal members to acquire the necessary education, experience and skills to perform in positions of leadership and responsibility for the tribe.
Key management positions within tribal operations, gaming and other tribal business ventures are targeted for internships. This on-the-job experience dovetails with the academic goals and curriculum of the candidate as well as assisting to develop the community to its fullest potential.
All leadership interns are required to work 20 hours per week throughout their internship. During regular academic and holiday breaks, interns work 40 hours per week. Leadership interns receive wages, fringe benefits and annual/sick leave. Supervisors work with interns to develop a work schedule which is conducive to the intern's academic schedule.
Leadership program success stories include Raul Venegas, Director of Player Development at SECR and new graduate Dustin Davis, Assistant Director of Ziibiwing Cultural Center.
"The Leadership program was developed by our tribe to create the world leaders of tomorrow from our own young people," said Venegas, who participated in the program from 1996 to 1999. "The opportunity to acquire relevant work experience while still in college gives students a sense of pride and accomplishment that carries over to their careers."
Davis agrees but cautions students to first develop their time management skills.
"I would recommend students enter the leadership program after completing their basic courses, when they are better prepared to balance work and school," he said.
