A powwow begins with Grand Entry as dancers fill the arena in a single line to fill the Sacred Circle. Representing life, the circle symbolizes the continual flow of life and death. Like a circle, all people are connected to one another.
Male veteran dancers carry the United States, Canadian and military flags, as well as eagle staffs. The eagle is a symbol of power and strength, and is believed to be a messenger between man and the Creator. The eagle staffs are offered to the Creator for this reason.
A Flag Song immediately follows Grand Entry and is similar to pledging allegiance to the flag or the playing the national anthem. The sacred song is a symbol of respect for countries and those who died protecting them. Out of respect to the drum, photographs should not be taken during the Flag Song,
Dancers are called to the circle with a drumbeat, which symbolizes their heartbeat. The rhythm directs their dance steps and accompanies all dances. The majority of singers are men, although recently women have added a distinct quality to the songs. The combination of words and music are a form of oral history sung in the group's native language. Singers learn the songs through apprenticeship. Drums are believed to have been once living creatures who sacrificed themselves for man to use. Drums are made from animal hides, wood and clay from the earth. The materials pay homage to the life forces: animal hides, wood to honor growth, pottery from Mother Earth, and the most precious element-water.
Each drum possesses a spirit and each drummer moves these spirits to come out for the dancers. The drumming calls out various emotions and guides everyone to dance in unity. The singers use sweetgrass and eagle feathers to ask Father Sun and Mother Earth to release the spirit of the drum.
Inter-Tribal dances bring the community together, as anyone can participate. Sometimes called Friendship Dances, they provide a chance for everyone to join the Sacred Circle of life.
