Joseph V. Sowmick - December 15, 2016
In an effort to provide bonus coverage, Team Observer flocked to a packed Eagles Nest Tribal Gym as the SCIT Recreation Department shared the “Reason for the Season” with tribal families and community. The Dec. 9 holiday event was a collaborative effort with the Nimkee Healthy Start Program.
David Merrill, Jr., Youth & Family Recreation Specialist mentions the “Reason for the Season” event has evolved from the previous “Home for the Holidays.” “In planning, we asked the community what we should name event and the one name people liked the most was ‘Reason for the Season’. I thought about what ‘Reason for the Season’ means to me and the thoughts that came to mind were family, friends and laughter,” Merrill, Jr. said. “That is what this event is about, the community coming together to celebrate Christmas with each other. Being with family and friends during this time of the year provides a belonging to our Tribal members.”
Helen Williams, Nimkee Healthy Start Child Nurse and resident elf, baked over 200 sugar cookies that were decorated by the community families at the wonderful event. “The kids and adults had fun decorating and eating the yummy cookies. Nimkee Public Health Nurses Sue Sowmick and Anna Hon were the elves that assisted the kids in the cookie decoration,” Williams said. “The Healthy Start Program hosted a fishing game where fathers and father figures were invited to go fishing with their kids. The game had participants catching a fish by answering a family spirit question. If they answered the question correctly, they got to pick a real nice gift.”
