Saginaw Chippewa voters will chart the future of their Tribal Council as they head to the polls on Nov. 4 to elect 12 officials.
Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Saginaw Chippewa Public Safety building for District 1 and the Saganing Outreach Center for District 2. Ballots have already been mailed out to the 1,081 registered District 3 voters.
District 1 candidates include Charmaine Benz, Brian Chippeway, Tim Davis, Audrey Falcon, Michael Floyd Sr., Amanda George-Dye, Brent Jackson, Delores Jackson, Josephine Jackson, Maynard Kahgegab Jr., Jeanette Leaureaux, Oliver Leaureaux, Patrick Mena, Ruth Moses, David Otto, Milton Pelcher, Lance Peters, Diana Quigno-Grundahl, Gerald Slater and Bernard Sprague.
There are 663 registered voters in the district, according to information from the Tribal Clerk's Office. The top 10 vote getters will occupy that many seats on Tribal Council. Davis, Delores Jackson, Kahgegab, Pelcher, Quigno-Grundahl and Slater are all incumbents.
District 2 (Saganing) candidates include incumbent Connie freiburger, as well as LeEtta Hansen. There are 38 registered voters in the district. District 3 (At-Large) voters will choose from candidates Greg Falsetta, Jean Lang and Michele Stanley. There is no incumbent for the district following longtime Councilman Ron Jackson's recent retirement on Sept. 11.
"In order for the democratic process to work, it is vital for as much voter input from the membership as possible," stated Caucus Committee Chairperson Joe Sowmick. "In previous Tribal elections, we've seen where one vote can make a difference. And that one vote could be yours."
