The Saginaw Chippewa Tribal College Student Council will co-host their first traditional Jiingtamok Powwow on May 25 in conjunction with the Third Annual Woodland Spirits Arts & Music Weekend.
"We are sponsoring this event to show the community that education can motivate every aspect of our life, including spiritually and culturally," said David Sowmick, Student Council Treasurer.
The powwow will take place in the Soaring Eagle Entertainment Hall with doors opening at 11 a.m. Grand Entry is at noon and there will be no charge for admission.
Helen Roy and Brian Loney will serve as emcees for the dance performances, which will be conducted hourly until 6:30 p.m.
Head veteran dancer for the powwow will be Ron Johansen; head male dancer is Ruben Blackcloud; head female dancer is Jessica Kota and the arena director will be Paul Johnson. High Spirit will be the host drum.
Volunteer dancers are needed for the event and must sign up by May 15. For more information contact Sowmick at 1-888-7EAGLE7 extension 50152.
Besides fostering a cultural awareness, Sowmick said the event is an excellent opportunity to get a better understanding of what the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal College has to offer.
"We would like to influence students of every age to go on to attain college degrees," said Sowmick. "The world is changing and we as Native people need to learn about these new changes. Our college provides educational and cultural services that will help everyone to better serve the community."
