District 1 Saginaw Chippewa Tribal members Steve Pego Sr. and Milton "Beaver" Pelcher have been appointed to Tribal Council.
The action, which took place during a special session on April 29, occurred after the Tribal Observer was sent to press.
Tim Davis made the motion, supported by Lindy Hunt, to approve the appointments. It was passed by a 5-0 vote with Ron Jackson, Delmar Jackson Sr. and Robert Pego Sr. abstaining.
"I would like to thank you for appointing me to sit on the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe's Tribal Council and to continue working within the community," stated Pelcher in his April 30 acceptance letter. Before the appointment, Pelcher served as the Seventh Generation Program coordinator. "It is with great honor that I accept this opportunity to serve our great community. I look forward to fulfilling my duty as a Tribal Council member."
Pego left his position with the At-Large Department as youth coordinator about a month ago. He also expressed his gratitude in his acceptance letter.
"I want to thank you for appointing me to sit on the Tribal Council with you," he said. "It is with happy heart that I accept this responsibility to serve on the Tribal Council. I eagerly look forward to working with each and every one of you."
Article VI, Section 4 of the Tribe's Constitution allows the Tribal Council to appoint qualified individuals to the Tribal Council to fill vacancies caused by death, resignation, forced absence or removal from office.
The two seats became available after Sue Durfee and Bernie Sprague were removed from office for misconduct and neglect of duty in late March.
The two are expected to be sworn in during the next regular session of Tribal Council on May 6.
