The Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian ignores the historical atrocities against Native Americans and its name should reflect this victimization, according to American Indian Movement officials.
WASHINGTON (AP)—A colorful Native Nations procession—called the largest gathering in history of North and South America’s indigenous people—heralded the Sept. 21 opening of the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of the American Indian.
Although a Saginaw Chippewa Tribal delegation was impressed with the thousands of Indians who showed up for the procession commemorating the opening of a new museum, there was mixed reaction to the Smithsonian Institution facility.
