History

The Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe (SCIT) is committed to its young people. In August of 2010 a three day Native Youth Leadership Academy was held to further develop leadership skills of the youth who attended. During this training, the youth brainstormed forming a youth council. There was excitement for this new movement however it did not launch due to several factors.

SCIT's Behavioral Health wanted to support this idea and in August 2011 they sponsored a three day Native Youth Leadership Academy for leadership development and to formally begin the SCIT Youth Committee.

The following October 2011 a two-day planning meeting was held at the Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort to launch the SCIT Youth Group. The youth leaders attempted to have their first meeting on their own. There was some confusion and miscommunication at first and the leaders learned from this.

A first meeting was finally held and the mission and vision of the SCIT Youth Council & Youth Group was born. History was made on October 9, 2011 when the first officers of the SCIT Youth Council were elected.

It wasn't long until a resolution was duly adopted by the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Council with a quorum being present during a Special Meeting on May 2, 2012 by a vote of 8 for, 0 against, and 0 abstaining.
